El discurs religiós

Bissier 1964

"In any such attempt to clarify the structure of Christian theology, we quickly encounter several elements or levels of religious discourse: first, stories about events in history and God's part in them arising from the oral and the scriptural inheritance proclaimed and taught by the church; second, a reflection on these stories resulting in doctrines that became increasingly philosophical in form and led to severe controversies; third, the appearance of dogmas as codified, sanctified and authoritative expressions of the whole church's definitive interpretation of her inheritance of belief and reflection upon it; fourth, more philosophical elaboration of these dogmas into traditional church theology. Clearly, one of the main issues for contemporary Catholicism concerns the status -the menaingfulness and validity in the light of modern ways of thinking- of precisely this cumulative deposit of traditional doctrine, dogma and theology, that has defined Catholic belief. Modern science and historical inquiry have increasingly challenged the historical validity and the inherent authority of many of the "stories" (about the Hebrews, Jesus and the disciples) seemingly intrinsic to our faith; modern canons of knowing have questioned the very possibility of any changeless and supremely authoritative doctrines or dogmas. The modern sense of historical relativity has doubted the authority of past dogmatic and doctrinal formulations, however sacrosant or important; and changes in modern sensibilities and thought forms have found anachronistic and thus irrelevant the philosophical and theological elaborations of these dogmas generated in another age."

- En primer lloc, històries sobre esdeveniments en la història i el paper de Déu en ells en base a  l'herència oral i escripturística proclamada i ensenyada per l'església;
- En segon lloc, una reflexió sobre aquestes històries portant a doctrines que es van fer cada vegada més filosòfiques en la forma i van donar lloc a controvèrsies greus;
- En tercer lloc, l'aparició de dogmes com a expressions codificades, santificades i amb autoritat de la interpretació definitiva de tota l'església de la seva herència de fe i la reflexió sobre ella;
